Did you know.....
Laws in Jamaica relating to air pollution date back to 1946
In Jamaica there are three acts concerning air pollution. These are: the National Resource Conservation Authority (NRCA) Act (1991), the Clean Air Act (1964) and the Country Fires Act (1946) . However, the NRCA Act does not address air pollution specifically, the penalties under the Clean Air Act are as low as J $10.00 and the Country Fires Act does not apply to Kingston and St. Andrew.
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) developed Stack Emissions Standards, Ambient Air Quality Standards and Vehicle Emissions Standards in 1996 that set general standards for air quality in Jamaica. Since air quality is not routinely monitored, data on air quality are hard to come by and enforcement of the laws regarding air pollution is virtually non-existent. As concerned citizens we should lobby for increased enforcement and tighter laws.
Write your Member of Parliament, NEPA and the media with your concerns about air quality.
