Did you know.....
Facts on the State of Jamaica's Environment
- Approximately 20 million gallons of poorly treated or untreated sewage flow into Kingston Harbour daily. In addition, ground water in Kingston is contaminated by sewage, so most wells have been closed.
- There is no regular programme to test air or water quality in Jamaica. When tests are occasionally done, the results are rarely publicized.
- Our garbage dumps are improperly managed and there are no facilities for toxic, medical or hazardous waste disposal on the island. Many of our dumps are sited next to rivers, wetlands or the sea.
- Our reefs are dying. During the past twenty years, live coral cover has fallen from between 40% and 70% to between 5% and 10% in many places along the north coast.
- Beach erosion is a serious problem at many of our north coast resorts, due in part to coral reef degradation, improperly constructed coastal structures, destruction of sea grass beds and illegal beach mining
- Wetlands are destroyed every year for dumps, housing or tourism projects
- Jamaica has long been identified as having the most over fished waters in the English speaking Caribbean.
We believe...
Jamaica's natural environment is severely threatened. We owe it to current and future generations to ensure our health and priceless natural heritage is protected.
