Beach Clean-up

As a part of International Coastal Clean-up Week in September each year, JET organizes an annual beach clean-up which is regarded as an environmental education and advocacy activity. The clean-up has been done since 1993 and most participants are teenagers. Since 1995, JET has cleaned up the Palisadoes strip, the main entrance to Kingston from the Norman Manley International Airport. The clean-up has included two elements: heavy equipment clean-up of illegal dump sites and litter collection done by volunteers. The latter includes data gathering on the type of garbage encountered, and these records are sent to the Ocean Conservancy in the US to form part of an annual report on beach debris world wide.
