Earth Day 2004 - Recycle Jamaica Day
Schools Environment Programme Open Day
Jamaica's first Recycle Jamaica Day took place on Earth Day, April 22, 2004 at JET's headquarters on Waterloo Road. The event was attended by over 250 participants from schools, government agencies, sponsors and the general public.
The day's activities began at 6:00 a.m. with a live radio broadcast from KLAS FM. Members of the public began bringing in their recyclable materials as early as 6.00 a.m. By the end of the day, 40 large bags of PET bottles, 4 hampers of paper, 1½ skips of cardboard and 1 drum of glass had been deposited at the recycling centre. These items were then collected by our recycling partners (Minott Services Ltd., Garbage Disposal and Sanitation Systems Ltd. and Sweet Craft Limited).
| The Schools Environment Programme (SEP) also held an Open Day. Eight SEP schools mounted environmental displays along with the Dolphin Head Trust and the Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI). Topics of the displays included 'The Importance of Coral Reefs', 'Alternative Energy', 'Composting', Organic Gardening' and others. All guests were invited to view the displays, speak with the students about their participation in SEP and tour the Earth House grounds to look at our recycling centre, organic garden, compost heap and solar lamp. JET staff also engaged the students in environmental games on water and coral reefs.
