Communities get set to Participate in E-LAW Project June 2004

The Environmental Law and Advocacy (ELA) project is well under way as the Harbour View Citizen's Association has agreed to participate to tackle the myriad of environmental problems faced by their community, including a sewage treatment plant that has been non-functional for over ten (10) years. One agenda-setting session has already been scheduled.

Members of several communities in the Black River Basin in St. Elizabeth have also expressed strong interest in addressing river pollution issues there. The dispersal of the communities affected has made organisation into a unified group more challenging. Nevertheless, discussions continue and work is expected to proceed more rapidly in August after the return of the Legal Director.

JET is now part of a network to track the implementation of the Access to Information Act (ATI) 2002. The ATI confers the right to view certain documents held by government agencies. We hope this network will allow us to access environmental information more easily.
