From
Tuesday, April 18th to Friday, April 21st, the Jamaica
Environment
Advocacy
Network (JEAN) will be campaigning for the implementation of a
PET
plastic bottle recycling programme in Jamaica. This will
culminate with a press conference on Friday, April 21st
at the office of the Jamaica Environment Trust, 11 Waterloo
Road, Kingston 10.Using
the slogan “Plastic Equals Trash” (PET), JEAN asks all concerned
citizens to
show support for the campaign by taking PET bottles (soda and
transparent
juice bottles), along with placards in support of the campaign
to the office of the Jamaica Environment Trust in Kingston,
Negril Marine Park headquarters in Westmoreland and Gideon
Educational Centre in Buff Bay, Portland.
PET bottles present a significant environmental problem for
Jamaica, as they
are often carelessly discarded in gullies, streams and open
lots. Each
year, more than 250 million PET bottles are thrown away. Despite
this, Jamaica has no comprehensive plastic recycling programme.
The Jamaica Environmental Advocacy Network is a coalition of
groups and
individuals working to protect Jamaica's natural environment
through
advocacy.

island, please
