Through his charitable foundation, URGE, Ziggy Marley recently
made a donation to the Jamaica Environment Trust’s (JET)
Schools’ Environment Programme (SEP). This donation will be used
to offset some of the costs for implementing the groundbreaking
environmental education programme in 120 schools across
Jamaica.
SEP is currently in its 9th year and is the longest
running environmental education programme in Jamaica. To date,
it has been implemented in over 350 schools islandwide, training
over 600 teachers and 350,000 students. Each year, more than 400
teachers are trained in environmental topics using field trips
and hands-on methods.
SEP is run as an island wide competition and prizes are awarded
to regional and national winners, as well as to schools who
perform well in any of the four main categories:
- Managing garbage
- Greening of School Grounds
- Establishing an Environment Club
- Environmental Research
Schools performing exceptionally well in these four categories
are promoted to the Advanced Schools Division. Last year’s SEP
national winner, Westwood High School, won for the second
consecutive year, and was the only school to be promoted to the
Advanced Schools’ Division.
“Education on the environment is one of the most important
things we can provide our youth. I'm honoured to be able to
support such an important cause and establishment," said Ziggy
Marley.
