The Schools Environment Programme
The Schools Environment Programme (SEP) is a large environmental education programme implemented in over 350 Jamaican schools, reaching approximately 280,000 students and teachers (year 2003/2004). SEP's patron is the Hon. Diane Abbott, Member of Parliament in the U.K.
The Schools Environment Programme is a structured, hands-on, learning programme, which is run as a competition. An national awards ceremony is held each year. SEP is guided by a Teacher’s Manual, which outlines a required range of activities with an emphasis on improved teaching practice and curriculum integration. The SEP Teacher’s Manuals have now been linked to the primary and ROSE (Secondary) Curricula.
There are four categories of activities. Managing Garbage deals with solid waste issues and schools typically implement litter warden programmes, separate, reduce and recycle garbage, start compost heaps and conduct research on particular items of garbage. The Greening of the School Grounds category involves the planting of an organic garden or the establishment of a tree nursery. These activities often provide a small income for schools and improve the quality of school lunches. Under the Environment Club section of SEP, schools must start or strengthen an environmental club. Schools also do Environmental Research on a wide range of issues, including energy, deforestation, soil erosion, air and water pollution.
