A. Changing Public Perceptions Towards Sea Turtles

Funding Reporting

· Amount approved: $4,069,900

· Income to date: $4,069,900

· Expenditure to date: $ 3,346,920.97

· Balance to date: $722,979.03

· Status: Project continues as planned. TS currently completing progress and financial report for July to September,

Programme Activities

  • We have on record 18 confirmed nests, 15 of which came up with an average of 84 hatchlings. St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland continue to do well. Portland reported only 1 confirmed nests out of the 18 and no hatchling data.
  • One turtle sign has been installed in Hope Bay, Portland. We have received written approval from the Parish Council in St. Elizabeth however we still await written approval from the Westmoreland Parish Council to install the last two signs as they are to be done on the same day.

A. Sea Turtle Project/Sally Thomas

· Income to date: US$5000

· Expenditure to date: US$714.28 & J$107,734.71

· Balance to date: US$186.88 & J$56,209.04

· Status: Remaining funds will be used as co-funding for the EFJ project.

B. CIDA Sea Turtle Project

· Amount approved: $1,289,700

· Income to date: $696,705.69

· Expenditure to date: $479,360.56

· Balance to date: $217,345.13

· Status: First disbursement received August 16.

Programme Activities

  • TS submitted the requested TOR to Canada Fund
  • Approval has been received from UDC to install a turtle sign on Winnifred Beach. They have requested that their logo be included on the sign.
  • There have been no reports of turtle sightings however there have been sighting of tracks.
  • There was a report of a poaching on Winnifred Beach on September 16th. A report was made to NEPA and the enforcement officer for Portland visited the area. However she reported that she did not see the alleged poacher.

C. Film Project

Funding

The project has a balance of US$1900 and J$1600 to date.

When Jamaica's environmental watchdog group approved road expansion and coastal improvement works inside the Palisadoes Port Royal Protected Area without consulting the public, environmentalists took them to court and won.

The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) has been given leave to apply for a judicial review of the decision of two regulatory agencies to grant approval for development work along the palisades strip in Kingston.
