Beach Clean Up

Beach Clean Up

Events: 8

As a part of International Coastal Clean-up Week in September each year, JET organizes an annual beach clean-up which is regarded as an environmental education and advocacy activity. The clean-up has been done since 1993 and most participants are teenagers. Since 1995, JET has cleaned up the Palisadoes strip, the main entrance to Kingston from the Norman Manley International Airport. The clean-up has included two elements: heavy equipment clean-up of illegal dump sites and litter collection done by volunteers. The latter includes data gathering on the type of garbage encountered, and these records are sent to the Ocean Conservancy in the US to form part of an annual report on beach debris world wide. Please see Press releases on Beach Clean Up below:

Earth Day

Earth Day

Events: 6

Earth Day is celebrated world wide on April 22nd each year. First observed in the U.S.A. in 1970, Earth Day is intended to focus citizen attention on the natural environment and to remind us all of our obligations to protect and preserve the earth's natural resources.

JET plans an Earth Day activity each year. This has included public presentations, lectures and field trips. In 2000, the Student Environment Network (SEN) conducted a candle light vigil to protest the state of the Kingston Harbour. Since 2001, Earth Day activities have been the Earth Time Now conference.

In 2004, JET held Jamaica's first Recycle Jamaica! day on Earth Day. See Press releases below of Earth Day events after 2004:
